Activity Overview

On Friday, July 17, 2026, RAFIO youth participated in a workshop focused on different communication styles. The purpose of the activity was to help participants better understand their own ways of communicating and develop strategies that promote healthy, respectful, and effective interactions.

The workshop was facilitated by Mirsa-Princesse Lukasa, a counsellor from Family Services and Counselling Ottawa, as part of the collaboration between RAFIO and this partner organization.

Participants were introduced to four main communication styles:

  • Assertive communication;

  • Passive communication;

  • Aggressive communication;

  • Passive-aggressive communication.

Activities

During the workshop, the youth participated in discussions, conversations, and role-playing scenarios that helped them identify the characteristics of each communication style.

Through practical examples, they reflected on how to:

  • Express their ideas and opinions with confidence;

  • Communicate their needs and emotions clearly;

  • Respect the opinions, boundaries, and needs of others;

  • Better manage disagreements and conflict situations;

  • Adopt healthier communication practices in their personal, academic, and social relationships.

Particular attention was given to assertive communication, which allows individuals to express themselves with respect and confidence while also taking into consideration the needs and boundaries of others.

Participation and Feedback

The youth actively participated in the various discussions and role-playing activities. The facilitator’s dynamic and supportive approach helped create an environment conducive to self-expression, open discussion, and reflection.

The activity enabled participants to develop a better understanding of the impact their communication styles can have on their relationships with others. It also provided them with practical tools to promote respect, self-confidence, conflict resolution, and healthy relationships.

Closing of the Activity

The activity concluded in a positive and welcoming atmosphere. The youth were able to recognize the importance of communicating their emotions, needs, and boundaries in a clear and respectful manner.
