Introduction


On July 16, 2024, RAFIO organized a consultation and exchange event bringing together members from three key groups: single-parent families, youth, and seniors. The main objective was to identify the emerging needs of these specific groups and develop appropriate response strategies. The event also aimed to recognize and highlight services that have been well received by the community.


Objectives of the Event


a. Identification of emerging needs: Understand recent challenges faced by single-parent families, youth, and seniors.

b. Development of solutions: Design strategies and methods to effectively respond to identified needs.

c. Service evaluation: Highlight services that have had a positive impact and were well received by the community.


Event Overview


a. Welcome and Introduction


The event began with a warm welcome to participants, followed by an introduction by Aïssatou Soumaré of RAFIO, who presented the objectives of the day and facilitated the session.


b. Discussion Session


Participants were invited to share their observations regarding emerging needs, with the goal of:

  • Identifying specific needs: Members of each group shared recent experiences and challenges

  • Proposing solutions: Participants brainstormed potential responses to identified needs


c. Presentation of Results


RAFIO team members presented the proposals to all participants. This allowed for the sharing of perspectives across groups and discussion of proposed solutions.


d. Service Evaluation


A segment of the event was dedicated to evaluating services provided by RAFIO and other partner organizations. Participants provided feedback on what worked well, strengths, and areas for improvement.


e. Celebration and Recognition


The event concluded with a celebration session where positively impactful services were highlighted. Beneficiary testimonials were shared to illustrate the effectiveness of these services.


Key Results


a. Emerging Needs


  • Single-parent families: Need for affordable childcare services and concerns related to work-life balance

  • Youth: Demand for employment and training opportunities, as well as safe and welcoming spaces for social and educational activities

  • Seniors: Increased need for home visits to reduce isolation and access to adapted social and cultural activities


b. Proposed Solutions


  • Single-parent families: Develop alternative childcare options or strengthen access to accredited childcare services

  • Youth: Build stronger connections between youth and various personal and professional development programs

  • Seniors: Increase home visits and organize events/workshops to reduce isolation and promote social connection


c. Successful Services


Participants expressed strong satisfaction with the following services:

  • Free counseling program with our partner SFC Ottawa

  • Personalized support for addressing daily life challenges


Conclusion


The event was a success, marked by meaningful discussions and positive outcomes. The emerging needs identified provide a strong foundation for RAFIO’s future initiatives. The proposed solutions, if implemented, could significantly improve the quality of life of single-parent families, youth, and seniors. Recognition of effective services also strengthened community morale and trust in support efforts.
