Location: Service Familial et Counseling Ottawa

Target Audience: Seniors from the Burundian community
Introduction
This workshop was organized to raise awareness among Burundian community seniors about mental health and to provide them with tools to identify factors that may affect it. The session is part of a broader approach to support and prevention in mental health for older adults.
Workshop Overview
The workshop began with a presentation by physiotherapist Reginald Alexis, who introduced the topic by explaining the importance of mental health among seniors. He highlighted the link between physical and mental health, as well as the impact of lifestyle habits on psychological well-being.
The following themes were addressed:
Early signs of mental health challenges (stress, anxiety, depression, social isolation, sleep disorders)
The importance of community and family support
The effects of life changes (loss of independence, bereavement, migration) on mental health
Strategies to maintain good mental health, including physical activity, balanced nutrition, and participation in social activities
Interaction and Discussion
Participants actively engaged in discussions, sharing personal experiences and asking questions about best practices for maintaining good mental health. Many highlighted challenges related to isolation and the lack of community activities.
Refreshments
Refreshments were served, providing a friendly and informal space for interaction between seniors and the facilitator.
Conclusion and Recommendations
The workshop concluded with an emphasis on prevention and open dialogue about mental health within the Burundian community. It was recommended that regular meetings be organized to reduce isolation and encourage ongoing discussion on these issues.
