Target Audience: Seniors from the Burundian community
Introduction
This workshop was the second in a series organized to raise awareness among Burundian community seniors about mental health. The main objective of this session was to develop strategies to improve the mental well-being of immigrant seniors, taking into account the specific challenges they face.
Workshop Overview
The session began with a presentation by physiotherapist Reginald Alexis, who revisited the key points from the first session and introduced the day’s topics:
The importance of mental health for the overall well-being of seniors
Factors affecting the mental health of immigrant seniors (cultural shock, language barriers, social isolation, and limited access to appropriate care)
Practical strategies to strengthen mental health, including:
Strengthening social and community connections
Physical activity and its benefits for mental well-being
Access to psychological support services
Relaxation and stress management practices
Interaction and Discussion
Participants shared their personal experiences and exchanged advice on strategies that helped them better manage daily challenges. Emphasis was placed on the importance of community support in maintaining good mental health.
Refreshments
Refreshments were served, providing an opportunity for informal and friendly exchanges between seniors and the facilitator.
Conclusion and Recommendations
The workshop highlighted the need to create regular discussion spaces to support the mental health of immigrant seniors. Participants expressed interest in future meetings to further explore these topics and apply the strategies discussed.
